Prime Minister Brown hit one of the biggest roadblocks in his short career as prime minister as 28 members of the Labour party backed an amendment that would give council house mortgage holders more options. The bill is calling for more money to be spent on these properties and for renovations for existing properties. One of the members said that the demand for social housing is increasing not declining and that more needs to be done to help council house mortgage holders. Although many are in opposition to helping these people, the 28 members are doing their best to stick by their constituents. So far the government has planned to build three million new homes with a progress expected of about 240,000 homes per year. However, critics feel that this is not enough and more focus needs to be cast on council house mortgage holders and their needs. This has met with a great deal of opposition and some members of Parliament seem to want to cut back on these plans and focus their attentions on more prime markets. These critics are holding up the failures of the subprime housing market as evidence that the plan is not solid.
