If Caroline Flint, the new Housing Minister has her way, those holding council house mortgages will be forced to find work. Flint believes that too many are becoming a burden on society as well as their own parents and that they only way to deal with the problem is to force the nearly 1 million council house mortgage holders to get a job. She stated recently, “Too many young families, are dependent on the Bank of Mum and Dad to get their foot on the property ladder since they cannot get a mortgage they can afford.” Her plan includes ways to increase employment opportunities closer to home for council house mortgage holders. She stated, “Rather than the jobless going miles to get employment, debt and childcare advice, it is better to bring that advice to them.”Flint also stated that the plans in place to build three million new homes by 2020 are still a go. Despite the problems with council house mortgages, Flint believes that “We are winning the argument, but I want to establish a national consensus that building more homes - including more social and affordable housing - is the right thing to do. My challenge is winning support for where those homes should be … we cannot all say ‘we need more homes, but not near me’.”
